Chat in GoGuardian Teacher

Chat in GoGuardian Teacher lets teachers chat directly with students without needing to use email or interrupting class. Notice a student spending too much time off-task? Want to quietly send another student encouragement for finding the answer to a difficult problem? Need to make sure everyone in your class sees an important message?

Chat gives teachers a way to help students along without needing to escalate to closed tabs or locked screens, and Announcement Mode provides a useful tool for communicating important announcements to single students or entire classrooms.

In addition to this article, you can also check the Chat in GoGuardian Teacher FAQ for more information.

How Chat Works

You can use Chat to talk to students and they can talk to you while your classroom is in an active session. When a classroom is not in session, chat is unavailable. You can learn more about starting and ending class sessions in GoGuardian Teacher here: Sessions.

Chat works somewhat differently for teachers and their students. If a student receives a message from multiple teachers in multiple classrooms, they will be able to see, send, and respond to each of them in the Conversations menu. Conversely, teachers are able to see, send, and respond to messages for the currently active classroom.

If you only use GoGuardian Teacher for one class at a time and only ever have one active classroom session, then all of your messages can be seen by clicking on the Chat icon in the lower-right corner of Teacher.

If you run more than one GoGuardian Teacher classroom at a time, you will need to change your currently active classroom to see messages for each different classroom.

For example, if a teacher is concurrently running the classes Biology and Cytology, and has Biology selected, then they will be able to see, read, and respond to student messages in the Biology classroom. However, they will not be able to see, send, or respond to messages with students in the Cytology classroom until they change their active classroom to Cytology.

You can change your currently active classroom by clicking on the context menu on the left side of GoGuardian Teacher and selecting a different classroom from the Active Session menu:

How Announcement Mode Words

You can send an important message to one student or your entire class by using Announcement Mode. When a chat is sent to a student when Announcement Mode is enabled, it will lock their screen until the student confirms that they have read the message.

After Announcement Mode is turned on, Chat in Teacher works the same way: type in your announcement, and then click the or press Enter on your keyboard. The message will be sent to your student or your classroom right away! Just like your other Chat messages, each message sent will appear in the student’s Chat window.

To enable Chat for a classroom session:
  1. Start a classroom session as normal.

  2. Click Enable Chat, next to the End Session button.

  3. After enabling chat, you can disable chat using the same button:

Using Chat with Multiple Teachers and Helpers

If your class uses multiple teachers or helpers, then each of you will still be able to see, send, and respond to messages with students. All of the designated teachers and helpers in each classroom share a chat channel, which means that they will be able to see all chats between teachers, helpers, and students.

You can learn more about how to designate teachers and helpers here: Setting up teacher accounts and Adding teachers and Helpers to a classroom.

For example: a classroom has two teachers, Mr. Smith and Mrs. Jones, and one helper. If Mr. Smith messages a student, then both Mrs. Jones and the classroom’s helper will be able to see the message Mr. Smith sent, as well as any responses sent by the student. By the same token, any message sent by a student in this classroom will be visible to Mr. Smith, Mrs. Jones, and the classroom helper.
